What exactly do you mean by Ubuntu Recovery list, the crash is being
caused because of a software, please also provide us with some more
information on your computer :)

Are you fully updated?

Have you installed video card drivers?

Have you tried using different players?

Is it certain file types which trigger it?

How you tested your RAM?

My computer is a Dell Dimension C521 and some time back it started crashing while I was watching videos on Totem. The problem got really serious and the system started crashing everytime both in Ubuntu and Windows so I tested the RAM but didn't find any problem and afterwards the PC was working fine again.

Now I am back with the same problem in Ubuntu. Every now and again, especially after watching streaming videos or TV in Firefox, the system crashes and afterwards I find a new Ubuntu Recovery in the list of partitions when I power on the PC.

Now I installed Kaffeine and Movie Player as well but I never used them much so I don't know if they are working fine or not.

Another big problem I have is with the Webcam which doesn't work at all.

I don't know if I installed the video card drivers properly but when I tried to resolve the Webcam problem I tried many solutions on the terminal which might have had to do with the video card drivers. Please see my query in relation to Webcam.

Thank you for your help.

Well the video drivers are installed. I suggest you run:

sudp apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-restricted-extras

and try a different player or two.
