What is the best method to run ubuntu 9.10 and windows 7 on the same desktop pc?

Asked by BK Singh

Dear Sir,

What is the best method to run ubuntu 9.10 desktop amd64 and windows 7 64 bit version on the same desktop pc so that I can enjoy best and full fledged features of both these operating systems without any trouble? Which is the best alternative from among the following?

(a) Dual boot ubuntu and windows (Windows installed first) by creating space for ubuntu on windows partition
(b) Install ubuntu using Wubi inside windows
(c) Install and Run ubuntu inside windows using virtual machine softwares like VMWare

Apart from the above, do you have any other appropriate method better than these? Kindly guide me on this issue. Thanking you all!

Sincerely yours,

Bhupendra Kumar Singh

From my perspective, the first method is the best method.
Because in other two methods (b & c), the Ubuntu will work slower.
Moreover you cannot enjoy the full benefits of ext3/ext4 filesystems, since you will be using NTFS file system.
So performance wise dual boot is the best choice.

Install Win7 but customise the partitioning. DO NOT just click next as usual, partition the drive to use less tan 100% of the space, leave unpartitioned space for the Ubuntu install. You will then avoid the need to resize the partition. Once you have Windows setup nice, Install Ubuntu to the unused space. The dual booting will be handled in Grub2 automagically

Don't use wubi, its godawful.

I would personally suggest A because: there's a lot of docs. on this
that can be found by a single google search, although this is a bit
risky but its the best.

I strongly recommend not to use B because I have seen a lot of people
having problem with WUBI and you can use C depending on what you
computer specs. are, usually to get a full experience you should use A

But in any case, please remember: BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE TRYING ANY OF
THESE OUT :)

Actually there is a 4th method. Install Ubuntu on a virtual machine such as VMware player. I don't like the reboot option because it takes time to reboot and switch between the two. Can anybody tell me if the virtual machine option is better or faster than Wubi inside windows (option b)?

If you want to use heavy 3D software, VMware player (or Virtual Box) is not a good solution.
Else I find more practical to have at same time both OSes, ans so use Virtual Box (with XP as guest and Ubuntu as host, more efficient that opposite configuration).
You can also install Ubuntu and run some Windows software with Wine (Windows emulator), but not all software work properly.
Currently, I use both dual boot Vista/Ubuntu (for games and some software) and XP and Seven in Virtual Box over Ubuntu.
