updating software in a netbook

I have a dell netbook with an 8gig flash drive. Is there any way to choose which updates are downloaded? The last time I ran update manager, my system crashed because the drive was too small to hold all of the updates. My son the computer genius was able to get it to run again, but I'm wondering if there is any way to prevent this from happening.

just unclick files are no inportant or every week update not every month or 3 months
