You can also open a "real" console, they are a few of them, from CTRL+F1 to CTRL+F6. The first graphical screen (the one you're using) is CTRL+F7.

Ops, *there are.

And it's ALT+CTRL+F1 up to ALT+CTRL+F6.

The CTRL-ALT-F* combo is for getting to a VGA or framebuffer virtual consoles from inside X, to get back to X it is ALT-F7, no CTRL needed.
