How to remove Ubuntu

Asked by Tahnee

I have a mini dell inspiron and it already came installed with the Ubunto operating system. I want to remove it so that I can install Windows XP SP2 but the guys from Dell said I need to pay them to talk me through the process so I want to do it myself. I am quite good with computers although I don't want to mess it up so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

If you already have a XP CD at hand, just boot your computer from that cd and follow the instructions on screen.

Windows will overwrite your existing Ubuntu installation.

Remember that this will delete all of your data on the hard disk, so you should save all the documents and important stuff you may have BEFORE starting the installation procedure, or you will lose them.

Hope it helps.

The data backup is very important, so don't miss that step!

I have already tried to run xp but nothing happens. I tried to click on auto run but it wouldn't let me. Nothing is compatible with Ubunto so I feel like I need to remove it and start fresh but I don't know how?

Make sure you boot from CD when you insert the Windows disk. The way to do this depends on your motherboard, but you can usually enter BIOS upon booting by entering F2 or DEL. Most likely during booting you will see a message listing the button you need to press.

In BIOS, find the part that says Boot Menu or something similar and make sure your optical drive comes first in the listed boot order. Save settings and reboot while having your Windows disk insert and voila, you should be able to replace Ubuntu with Windows.

Try this:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/clean_installation_of_windows_xp.htm

I only had a quick look but it doesn't seem to tell you (in the step about "available partitions" that you'll need to select ANY and ALL partitions and DELETE them then CREATE a PARTITION on the UNPARTITIONED space. The options in the install process on your XP CD will take you through that.

Be aware that what I just said wipes absolutely everything!

Don't think you can break much from there as you can always boot to the CD again as long as you don't have anything you need in the Ubuntu installation.

Can you help with this problem?
