Older PC installation problem.

Asked by Alwyn

I installed Ubuntu on a pentium 4 and everything worked first time. A friend then also wanted Ubuntu on his pentium MMX machine but we get the following error message: [17179569.184000] ACPI: Unable to locate RSDP. The live CD then starts up and everything except the mouse works. This is true for both 6.06.1 and 7.04 Ubuntu desktop versions. Why doesn't the mouse want to operate? Will an older (other) version work and if so where can one get it?

Is his machine pre-2000?
It is possible that ACPI is not well supported by his motherboard. Try adding these options to the kernel boot line:

noacpi
acpi=off

Cesare,

Thank you for coming back.

This machine is 4 to 5 years old. What is ACPI and is it related to the fact that the mouse doesn't work after boot-up from the live CD?

I am booting from a live CD downloaded from the UBUNTU site. How can I add the commands you are suggesting to the kernel boot line?

Thanx,
             Alwyn.

¿Do you pretend to install ubuntu on Pentium MMX, like 233mhz?
You have a ram limitation with this.
Remember that for use Ubuntu-livecd you need more than 256MB RAM, Ubuntu desktop-alternate require a little but, is recommended 192 o more. If you have a little little ram, you can check with Fluxbuntu, the more light version of Ubuntu.
¿Can you give more info from this system?
Example --> CPU, RAM, VGA controller.

Thank you Antonio for coming back. I think you are correct. The ram on this machine is not enough and this is possibly causing the problem with the mouse. I will install more ram and if I still have a problem with the mouse I will post a new message. It might be a problem to get SD ram modules as this is very difficult and expensive. My friend can not afford expensive upgrades and I would like to help him.

If I can not get bigger ram modules will Fluxbuntu run on this machine? The info on this machine is as follows: 200 Mhz Pentium-MMX, 64 Mb ram, PA305 AGP True Color VGA controller.

Regards,
                  Alwyn.

I search info about your VGA, and it have got a a SIS controller.

http://www.aopen.de/tech/report/vga/pa305/

There are many problems with SIS controller.

Fluxbunxu can run on this machine that you say.
You can read this link for more info about how to install and tips:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems

The fluxbuntu page:
http://fluxbuntu.org

It can run with 64M of ram, but if you can find more, with 92 or 128 it run better.

Antonio,
I read your message by chance. I am new in Linux/Ubuntu and know little about it. Had never heard of Fluxbuntu.
I thought the lighter Ubuntu was Kubuntu. How is it different from Fluxbuntu?
regards,

Pedro

Fluxbuntu use a Fluxbox Desktop, light graphics and memory requeriment.

Kubuntu use a KDE Desktop and Ubuntu use Gnome Enviroment, with require more RAM memory than others.

There are other lights distros, like Ubuntu-Lite , Vector or DanmSmall.

You can look for more info at wikipedia.org
