SCSI drive installation
Using the same ubuntu installation CD I get differences between the 20G IDE drive and the 40G SCSI drive in my desktop computer. Booting from the IDE drive everything works 100% except that the selectable screen resolutions has only 3 choices. Booting from SCSI drive there are significantly more resolutions to choose from. How is this possible in the same computer? Also the log off button in the top right hand corner is a small exit door when booting from the IDE and an on/off button when booting from the SCSI. I had no problem installing AVG free antivirus (Linux version) on the IDE drive and it works 100%. Installing the same on the SCSI drive worked but the program will NOT run when I click it! The network connection works 100% on both drives. Both are set up with the same passwords. I can not understand why the differences between the 2 drives exist.
Ps. The computer is a HP server tc2110 set up as a desktop. I added the IDE drive later.

Thanks for your question.
There are a few possible answers to your experience:
1) You're using to different Ubuntu distributions, e.g. Feisty and Edgy, on the drives
2) You've updates one of the two installations from a previous installation, say from Edgy to Feisty (which keeps some of your preferences)
3) Both installations are not on the same update level. Try updating both installations with "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade".
| Alwyn (tccermelo) said : | #2 |
Thanks Markus.
I am new to Linux so please excuse my lack of understanding. The answer to the 3 suggestions are as follows:
1) I have used the exact same installation CD. (As I can figure out it is the feisty distribution downloaded from the web)
2) The was NO Linux installation on either IDE or SCSI drives. (Used to be MS windows 98)
3. Doing the sudo update & upgrade solved the problem with AVG anti virus. It now runs on both disks. Thank you very much!
The different log off buttons is still there (this is no problem) and the different selectable screen resolutions also exist. Booting from the IDE drive I still have only 3 resolution choices but booting from the SCSI there is 10 resolution choices that can be selected. This is not a big problem but I don't understand why this is the case. I would like to be able to do the same resolutions from both drives.

Thanks for your reply.
After you've updated one system, did you log out and log in back? Or even better: Please restart. Does it still show the old icon? Do you still have different selection for the resolution?
If so, please add the output of
1) lsmod
2) lspci
to this question.
| Markus Thielmann (thielmann) said : | #4 |
(Please add the output of lsmod and lspci for *both* installations!)
| Alwyn (tccermelo) said : | #5 |
Thank you for your reply. The icon and screen resolution problem is the same after a restart.
What do you mean by Ismod and Ispci? What output should I add this to and how?
| Markus Thielmann (thielmann) said : | #6 |
1) Open a terminal (Applications-
2) Paste the first command to the terminal
3) Press enter
4) Mark the output of the command and paste it back to this question
5) Paste the second command to the terminal
6) Press enter
7) Mark the output of the command and paste it back to this question
To see copy and paste in action, have a look at this short screencast: http://
Please notice that it is "LSMOD" and "LSPCI", just in lowercase (that's important!). Not "ISMOD" and "ISPCI" like you wrote.
Just copy, paste and report back:
1) lsmod
2) lspci

Allright, last question (for both systems):
Please provide the content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
You may do so by running
1) gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Just copy and paste the content of the two files to this question.

Ah, here we go.
You xorg.conf files differ quite much.
a)
PC 1:
Option "XkbLayout" "za"
PC 2:
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
That totally unrelated to the bug, but you choose different Keyboard layouts for the two "drives"
b)
Drive !:
Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV6 [Vanta/Vanta LT]"
Drive 2:
Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro]"
Since both systems use the same driver ("nv") it's not important. But I'm wondering if you maybe changed the autodetected graphics card within installation? Since it's quite strange that the same installer should detect different graphics cards when there are different drives in action?
Drive 1:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 28-51
VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection
Section Screen
[...] covering all resolutions
EndSection
Drive 2:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "SyncMaster"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
Section Screen
[...] covering up to 1280x1024
EndSection
Here we go. PC 1 limits the available resolutions to an detected monitor which is not able to show them.
Resolution:
Copy the file xorg.conf of Drive 2 to Drive 1 and everything will work fine.
If you're *absolutly* sure you didn't change any autodetection settings during installation, or if you are able to reproduce this behavior (would be *a lot* of work, since it would include reinstallation) you may have found a really hard to find bug.
| Alwyn (tccermelo) said : | #14 |
Thanks Markus Thielmann, that solved my question.
| Alwyn (tccermelo) said : | #15 |
The different keyboard selections is correct. I am sure that the different screen resolutions is NOT a bug. After I installed Linux on the IDE drive I had a problem with the Mitac screen and replaced it with a SyncMaster and then did the second installation on the SCSI drive. Am I correct to assume that this caused the problem? If so how would you get Linux to detect a new screen without re-installing?
(The exit buttons still differ but is no problem.)
My sincere thanks for all the trouble. I learnt a lot as a new Linux user and greatly appreciate your help. I am also very happy that I can now select the same resolutions for both drives.
Regards,
| Markus Thielmann (thielmann) said : | #16 |
Yes, you're correct. At least for the screen. :-)
You don't need a "redetection", since the detected graphics hardware is written to the xorg.conf file. Only once -at installation-. So if you just copy the xorg.conf file to the other drive, everything will work as if you did a new install with the right detection. There's no other source for X to get it's informations.
However, If you need the different keyboard layouts, just change the line according to your selection.
