Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Don't panic! You can use integrated GNOME CD/DVD-burning feature: launch nautilus ("Home") and type "burn:///" into the address line (without quotes; address line can be enabled in the nautilus settings if needed). It works correctly.

Sure you can use the following command to record a DVD in a terminal:

growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -R -J /some/files

where /some/files is the path to directory containing files to write.

To write a pre-mastered ISO-image to a DVD:

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=image.iso

where image.iso is a image file name

For more information, type man growisofs in a terminal.
