The cam is Logitek. One disk. The software only needs installed, the cam merely plugs into a USB port. The security is Norton Internet Protection (2 disks).

can you please provide:

lsusb

This will help identify your camera.

In Linux there are very few virus' (about 5 in total) and are not wild at all. The user model in Linux is implemented in such a way that even if you did get one the damage is extremely limited (unless you are one of those complete and utter morons who logs on as root to web browse and check email)

Short answer is, you don't need it. If you are running a file share with windows systems (whose default user model is administrator and is VERY poor) then you can save the systems from each other with antivirus. You will also need it if you intend to install an email server and the same reasoning applies there too.

If you REALLY want antivirus then please read this:

I have no clue what an Isusb is. The cam won't operate without the software which provides setup for sound, color, etc. All I want to know is how to do it. Do I just put the disk in the drive and forget it? I think not. I have to run tests required by the software. And the reason I am on Ubuntu is that my last internet service provider (with Windows XP in my computer) allowed a worm through their so-called security ( McAffee) which attacked only the recovery and security software!! Clever!

By the way, I an not an utter and complete moron as you alluded. I merely wanted an answer to an honest question. After a dozen years with windows, and this being my first day with Linux, I thought it would be wise to ask. Sorry if I offended your sensibilities by not already knowing how to do it. I'm not clicking "problem solved" because it isn't yet.

Don't bother talking down to me with an answer. I'll figure it out myself.

javelina51, you have listed two problems:

1. How to get your webcam working.
2. How to install AntiVirus software.

1. To identify your Logitech webcam model, would you please open a terminal window - Applications, Accessories, Terminal, and type into the screen: lsusb

This will show what USB devices are connected to your computer including your Logitech webcam. Look for ID 046d:xxxx.
Please report back with these numbers.

You do not need software installation discs in Ubuntu - these are for Windows only.

2. You do not need AntiVirus software and your software discs will not work in Ubuntu. If you wish, you can install AVG for Linux.

Run command lsusb and check if webcam is detected on USB bus.
