9.04 Wired Network disconnected.

Asked by Pepe

Jaunty was working fine for about 3 weeks, then came the bad news.
Wired Network disconnected. You are now offline. Why? I double checked the connections and everything OK. I could not get on the Internet.
I am using another computer now with 8.10 which works fine. Has it been fixed on 9.04? Thanks

What does ifconfig say?

The other computer, do you connect it using exactly the same hardware, including cables?

Both computers are emachines and connected in exactly the same way. One has 9.04 with the error message and cannot connect. The other one has 8.10, connected in exactly the same way and it is what I am using to write this.

I don't know what the ifconfig says. I will look into it to find out.

What app is saying it is offline? If it is firefox I have a fix but if its something else we'll need to dig deeper.

Sounds like you're speaking about your web browser, e.g. Firefox.

What happens if you open a terminal window and type "ping www.google.com" (without the quotes) and press enter?

I am going to download 9.04 onto my laptop which has 8.10. I will then test the internet connection again. I will try this ping business then if I need it.
The other computer has been completely disconnected. I am using all connections to this other computer, the one I am using to write this on.
Thanks a million.
Meanwhile I am doing my four blogs, and making my deliveries.

I am sorry but I do not understand this computer language yet. I am learning but meanwhile I am working the computers and systems that I have now. I just moved to this apartment and I have many things to do. Thanks a million for efforts.
I downloaded 9/04 to the laptop and I just found out I could create a CD of the OS. I will buy one this morning. Then I think it will work on the laptop because I was still on line with 9.04 installed.

I am sorry but I am just going to have to back off a bit. I just found out that my download of 9.04 on my laptop was something else. I must create a CD first which I haven't bought yet.
Then I got the CD from Canonical today with 9.04 and I tried to install it and I can't. They seem to have discovered a more difficult way of doing it. I have to use smb on a floppy to install and I don't have a floppy drive.
I am quite sure I had 9.04 on my dead computer. How did that happen?
Meanwhile I am trying to do my work as best I can. I will see if I have some time to set up my old computer again and try your if/config command.
Thanks

Set up the old computer with the 9.04 separate and independent. It works. I can get online the way I did before. Or it seems so anyway, I don't know how long is will last.
Meanwhile the image has expanded too big for the screen. I tried to get the resolution up but it will not go higher than 800 x ?.
So apparently the download on this computer took just fine. Except for the trouble I was having.
Where can I check to make sure of the Ubuntu version that is installed?
A million thanks.

to show versions use

lsb_release -a; uname -a

You will need to install video drivers and configure your resolution to get something better than 800x600

I am having the asme issue with the network disconnected.
The Network Manager applet is saying that the network is not connected although it's visible in the applet. But when I try to enable it it tries to fetch an IP (the interface is set up as DHCP) and it fails. Also, pinging any address won't work (unknown host xyz).
Issuing ifconfig in a terminal lists my interface but there's no IP assigned to it. "dhclient" goes to sleep also without assigning an IP address. I have a Marvell Yukon 88E8053 Gigabit Ethernet Controller and from what I saw my Ubuntu 9.04 is using a sky2 driver for it. Is there a problem with this driver? And the strangest part is that I am writing this from that Ubuntu PC .... it suddenly started working a few minutes ago after a "dhclient" even though I spent a few days to make it work again. Maybe on my next restart it will stop working again .......
Hope this helps. Cheers!

I don't know how it happened that it began to work again and it is still working. I am going ot go through reinstall 9.04 on my laptop and see if it works there.
Meanwhile I have my ISP on ethernet without using Evolution and I want to see if I can get on it. I just don't understand the terminology. Server? who? Network? where? I am working on it. Thanks a million.
Also if you know anyone on these Islands that would like a copy of 9.04 I will make one and give it to them. I can help a little too.
