Networking old Knoppix-PC with new Ubuntu-PC

Asked by Frielinghaus

My old PC no longer always starts up with the KNOPPIX 3.7 CD.
Therefore I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my new Windows XP PC.
Each PC is connected by an Ethernet cable to a Speedport W 700V which is connected to the DSL-Internet.
I do not succeed in connecting the two PCs by Ubuntu -> System -> System administration -> Network.
(With Windows XP of my new PC I am able to connect to the Windows 98 SE operating system of my old PC.)

Is this your proposition:
"Then don't use ubuntu.use windows."?
Thank for your answer. But this does not help a Ubuntu- and Linux beginner.
