Part One
( wireless problem solving specialist here )

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable.

Then please follow this procedure (in order to gather troubleshooting info):

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --netcard
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Part Two

# Please try this Atheros driver installation procedure:

# First under System/Administration/HardwareDrivers, disable both the Atheros HAL and the Atheros wireless thing and then reboot.

# Then from a terminal type (press enter key after each line)

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install build-essential subversion

cd ~

mkdir madwifi

cd madwifi

svn co https://217.24.1.142/madwifi/branches/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6

cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6

make

sudo make install

sudo gedit /etc/modules

# Now add the Atheros kernel module ath_pci to the list of modules to be automatically loaded at boot by adding

ath_pci

# to the end of the /etc/modules file. (Gedit editor automatically opens)

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

# Now add the following line at the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file:

ndiswrapper

Now you can reboot and reactivate your wireless driver and reboot again and it should work.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Will,
I am using another computer to seek help, so I can't copy and paste lines.
I also can't connect with a LAN cable because I don't have one. Should I go ahead and try Part 2 driver installation? Do I need to be onthe internet to find the drivers or did they load with 8.10? Should I reinsert the CD?

go ahead and try part two but first disable your wireless drivers first and reboot your computer. it will be under System/Administration/HardwareDrivers. your wireless drivers will show disable all wireless drivers first then do part two once you are done with part two reboot your computer and enable your wireless drivers and reboot your computer again. i had the same problem your having and i did this in the exact order and i was able to connect.

Hi Schoales,

I highly recommend buying an ethernet cable (LAN cable). It only costs around 5 dollars.

Once you have bought the LAN cable, connect your network card to the wireless router using the new ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

After that, in order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below to the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)

sudo aptitude install hwinfo
hwinfo --netcard
sudo iwlist scanning
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep witch
iwconfig

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread

Step 4: Please also provide us with the exact model and make of PC you are using and post it on this thread

Regards,

Mark
