broken gui after upgrade

Asked by Mickey Sampson

after upgrade from edgy to feisty I lost the use of gui. system boots to bluescreen (failed to start X server.

unable to find a valid framebuffer device
failed to open framebuffer device
screen found but no usable config

fatal error no screens found

I don't know where to find the server log file and I'm not sure I could fix anything anyway. I already tried changing to previously saved versions of xorg.conf so the above described state is the partially due to my meddling. I don't know how to get output from the command line to you to check. Help!

do you know which driver you were using before upgrade? The xorg log file is in /var/log. i seem to remember on one of my dist-upgrades having to reinstall my video driver (using restricted ati driver)

As I had had only recently "won" a protracted battle to get beryl to work, I do remember the driver I was using. Nvidia!
Opened Xorg.0.log and found the above info... where else should I look? Where is "server log" ?

You can try to regenerate the xorg.conf by:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I assume you can boot in Recovery Mode?
