Which sound package are you using?
Can you open the full mixer program and make sure there isn't a level level set to 0 or muted?
Have you made sure the speakers are plugged into the green socket properly and that they're on and not set at too low volume?

lol, good luck ;)

Well, my computer is an AMD Sempron 2600 and the Sound Card is an Ensoniq. The
driver is ens1371. The system seems to recognize the card, but no matter what I try I get no sound. I am new to Ubuntu!!

Right click on the speaker icon up by the clock on the top taskbar. Down to 'Open Volume Control' that should open the full(ish) mixer window. Make sure the 3 controls - Master, Pcm and Front are all above zero.

Try having something playing as you gently raise them all up a bit. I have my speaker volume set so that 2 of those controls tend to need to be right near the top and then i find altering the other one has a significant impact.

Welcome in to Linux communities btw, hope you enjoy :)

Oh, when you opened the Volume Control mixer did it say it was the Alsa Mixer?
