changing lcd panel brightness

I'm using a new dell computer and have never used Ubuntu or know what it is. I want to increase the lcd panel brightness on this machine. I found a section under the Ubuntu preference section on Panel display brightness, however It will not do anything as it appears that all settings are locked.

When things are locked , that is a good sign to look for a place to put your password in to unlock it.
What you are looking for is on your KEYBOARD. Look for brightness up and down and the function key.
