whare is the startup manager?

Asked by Nicholas

I cannot control what operating system starts or the time allowed to decide. Where's the firewall?
Any ideas?

I've just installed Hardy.

I had Ubuntu 7. something. When the version of Ubuntu was installed, the original was repartitioned. Hardy Heron seems to be missing some bits. firewall, partition editor and startup manager..

I can work with partitions another way. I would like to control what os boots and how much time I have to think about it. This is an uninstall and ditch hardy Ubuntu issue.

Did you install GRUB? If so attach your menu.lst (it's in /boot/grub)

When I say I want to control the os to boot, I get a list on startup of 5 Ubuntu 8.04s, windows and 3 Ununtu 7.10s with 10 seconds to decide. Ubuntu8.04 is the default os. I need to change this.

you may use your preferred editor but I prefer VI.
go to a terminal
issue sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst
edit as needed.
replace vi with gedit if that is easier.
****I would suggesting using the cp command to copy the original to a safe location before making changes. I usually also use comments inside the file to document changes that I have made and the reasons for the change including dates. It really helps later down the road when you re-visit the file.

you can find startupmanager from synaptic, open your synaptic package manager, search word startupmanager, and install it ....

you can set time allowed to decide from startupmanager ...

For firewall, you can instal firestarter (from synaptic too), after install, you can find it in application -> Internet -> Firestarter ...

Hope this help
