Intermediate computer operator installing Ubuntu on my old Dell.

Asked by jim

Is the ubuntu O/S designed to be loaded over an existing windows based system?
Is it better to have a 100 percent clean hard drive/computer before loading ubuntu?

I am willing to dedicate 1 of my computers entirely to ubuntu so i can learn everything about it. I want to prepare/configure my computer with the single purpose of learning how to run ubuntu and testing its capabilities.

I ordered the disc last night and while I am waiting for it to arrive I would like to know if there is anything I can do in the meantime to make my computer ideal for ubuntu?

My computer is a (Vintage 1998) Dell XPS R400. 400mgz PII, 10g HD, 768 sdram. It has a zip drive, floppy drive, cd drive, and an external dvd drive called a "backpack dvd".

Is this enough computer to handle ubuntu? Again, I am willing to unistall anything and everything on this computer to accomodate ubunto.

Here are the system requirements for ubuntu.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

You may be better off installing xubuntu.
http://www.xubuntu.org/

Unfortunately I don´t believe that you can order this CD. You will have to download the ISO and install.

Or you can wait and installl ubuntu and then install the xfce desktop and run xubuntu that way. Please read

Hope this helps
