After Hibernation, Ubuntu loads with only background image

Asked by DonP

Last night I hibernated Ubuntu (the latest version) for the first time and this morning it booted back up with only the desktop's background image but nothing else. Where are the menus and applications? Shutting down and rebooting did the same thing. Please advise ASAP as it's useless as it is. Thanks.

Anybody? It's rather useless until I learn what went wrong.

No answer? The responses are a lot like Microsoft so I wonder why I'm changing to a new OS. In any event, I ended up having to reinstall Ubuntu so there is clearly some bug that caused the menu to disappear. After reinstallation I could not get the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to work again even though it was easy the first time but an update to 8.10 solved it.
