music is coming through computer and not attached speakers

When inserting a cd into my computer it's being played through the computer as opposed to the speakers that I've attached. Is there a Ubuntu speaker installation process?

are you using USB speakers by any chance ? if so, then run
asoundconf set-default-card `cat /proc/asound/card1/id` to switch output to them & restart all audio apps.
run
asoundconf set-default-card `cat /proc/asound/card0/id` to switch back to computer speakers.
Note : Do not run as root, run these on your own login.
