This is an .rpm package which is a binary installer for RedHat and RedHat-based distributions. For Debian and Debian-based distros, one of which is Ubuntu, use .deb files. In general a good site to check is http://www.getdeb.net

In this particular case you can of course get a .deb for the Adobe Reader, but you certainly don't need it, as Ubuntu comes with evince, which is a pretty decent document viewer with more than just pdf functionality.

Hello,
AdobeReader is included in the medibuntu non free repository. Just add it and update your package list and you can simply install AdobeReader
To know how to add the medibuntu repositories : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu#Adding the Repositories

A) You don't need it at all as evince really is as good.

B) The non-free part of Medibuntu does not cost money. It's simply restricted by licensing in some countries.

Navigate to "System > Administration > Software Sources". Under the first three tabs (Ubuntu Software, Third-Party Software, and Updates) enable all repositories but 'proposed' and 'backports'. Leave "Automatic Updates" untouched also.

Then navigate to "Applications > Accessories > Terminal" and type

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

Hit Enter. Now type

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update && sudo ap-get install acroread

Hit Enter. There should now be an entry for Acrobat Reader in your gnome menu. If not, hit Alt+F2 > type acroread > hit Enter key.

you can use the alien command to convert rpm's to deb's if you want, and then install with dpkg

alien <rpm_file>
sudo dpkg -i <converted_package_name>

Can you help with this problem?
