Thank you for your answer but I do ot get past step 3. The last message I get is that it is scanning for HD, but it doesn't find any. That is why I say it is a blank unformatted HD.

Should I download a low level format program from Maxtor???

I don't think you understand. i have a seperate HD that has never been used. It is totally blank. MY PC does not see it. I know how to fromat a partition on an exhisting HD that already has Windows. This HD has "nothing". Unfortunately I don't have an A Drive so I cannot boot from a floopy. I didn't want to risk install on my primary HD.

Hi Nolan,

I would check your bios settings, to make sure the drive is properly installed and being detected by your bios. If your bios has a pretty splash screen, see if you can either escape out of it (sometimes it's tab, sometimes it's escape) or completely disable it (some setting in the bios somewhere).

When you first turn the computer on, when the bios is displaying messages, you should see something like:

Detecting Primary master... WDC034014 (or some number... generally the letters correspond to the maker of the disk)
Detecting Primary Slave....Not found

Just make sure it's finding all of your disks. If they are not found, check to make sure the bios is looking for them (ie 'primary slave' is not set to "Disable" somewhere in your bios)

It doesn't matter that the drive is not partitioned or formatting: both Ubuntu (and windows) setup will discover, partition and format a brand new disk.

If my above suggestions don't help at all, post back with further information about your hard drive, like how big, is it sata or ide, how old of a computer are you installing it in, and possibly double check your cable and jumper settings (i can help with those too if you need it)

The blank HD is ATA Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8. I know how to strap it.

My PC is about 8 years old HP Pavillion 7840 running Millenium. here was something wrong, I could never get Win 2000 to install, it keep aborting with a Kernal problem at the same point all the time, so  had to keep Millenium .  I will play around with the BIOS and let you know.

The BIOS looks ok. It looks like it is seeing the HD but  still cannot install. I am sending this to you via the CD. I ran the HW detector, it ran and sent a report to launchpad but I haven't seen it yet. Should I try Partition Magic on the HD??

When in the live cd, what is the output of the following on a terminal:

sudo fdisk -l

this should list all disks that linux can see... which from what I'm reading, it can't see *any* disks (which is why mkreiserfs would fail, as per Bhavani's suggestion)

While you're at it, is there anything related to hard drives in the output of

To run it as superuser/root run

'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a'

As an aside, it is advisable to post a new question if you've got further issues. You should have ideally marked this as solved when the initial Ubuntu installation had worked out.

I have concluded that the Installation problem is a bad HD. I successfully installed Ubuntu on my presnt HD, dual booting with Windows. Installing updates is another head ache. I do not have some much time to learn unix.
