I'm at a dead-end trying to install a sound card in Breezy Badger 5.10.

Asked by Jack Jebedee

Installing a Soundblaster Awe32. I read some of the forum problems that dealt with the same thing. I need to start Terminal. I found Terminal. I need to type in:

     sudo modprobe snd-sbawe

I did that. Instructions end there. I think Terminal is a primitive text editor, so I'm sure I ought to save the text file somewhere (directory unknown) by a specific name (name unspecified) so that it can be loaded by the kernal.

I feel like I'm back on my Commodore.

Hold the phone... I just found one more file at Icewalkers. This might be what I'm looking for...

Disregard. False alarm. Icewalkers had a great solution: Re-compile the kernal. Kernals can be re-compiled? Way cool! Who knew?

I feel like I just sat through a 3rd year calculus course after sleeping through freshman and sophomore years. Wait a minute... I did that and I didn't feel this lost. Maybe I ought to start getting used to a quiet computer and begin at the beginning. I can fire up a sound card and mount a vfat-32 hard drive when I work my way there from the introduction in the Basic Ubuntu Linux for everyone e-manual.

By the way... Has anyone seen that manual lately? I'm having a bit of trouble locating it.

Reading the Wiki... fascinating AND I understand it! Terminal isn't a primitive text editor at all! I followed directions to install my Awe32 sound card and got an entire page of errors as Ubuntu tried in vain to load something for it. Obviously, something important is missing. I wonder if Ubuntu comes with sb-awe. Maybe I need to dig it up somewhere and follow THOSE directions to get in onto my computer before I follow the directions I (unsuccessfully) followed today.

My computer-illiterate wife just installed TurboTax on her computer today, which certainly sounds a lot more complicated than trying to coax her machine to make a noise. But she uses Windows. Where's the challenge in that?

Is this an ISA or PCI soundcard? If it's ISA, please consider filing a bug report on the fact that the isapnptools package, which would include sndconfig, which would greatly simplify getting your ISA Soundblaster to work, is unavailable in Ubuntu. In the mean time, snd-sbawe is the appropriate kernel module (again, assuming this is an ISA card). If `sudo modprobe snd-sbawe` doesn't magically give you sound, please provide the output of the command if any and the output of `dmesg | tail`.

It never occurred to me to do that because I'm in the earliest stages of learning about Linux. I'm the LAST guy who should file a bug report. HOWEVER... You make sense when I consider that keeping my mouth shut is a good way to do nothing to improve Ubuntu Linux. Having no sound is also a great way of telling potential Linux users "Stay away! We're NOT ready for you yet!" So I filed bug report: Bug #33015 in gnome-terminal (Ubuntu): "Error codes when installing ISA PnP SoundblasterAwe 32 card (unsuccessfully)."

Hey, Ubuntu scored a lot better than Mandriva on my machine. Ubuntu never turned on the sound. Mandriva never turned on the sound, but it had a way for me to call it to the installation program's attention. Then it finalized the installation and shut off the video signal. Weird. I think it must have mis-diagnosed my ATI 9200 PCI card.

I really love the way Ubuntu works, when it works, but it's very hard to be productive right now in Ubuntu, which is a crying shame. I like Ubuntu's guiding philosopy. The coordinated (and probably poorly compensated) efforts of bright, dedicated folks around the world to make Ubuntu as good as it can be seems almost unbelievable. Go, team! Unfortunately, Ubuntu hasn't yet reached a level that will allow me to let go of Windows, which I would LOVE to do. But, of all the Linuxes I've tried, Ubuntu is my favorite.

Weird... I tried installing the Awe 32 card again tonight and everything worked. It's installed. I have rich, glorious sound. What the heck was the problem in the first place?

(Can't wait to try it on a few Google videos.)
