I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 a day ago. I love it but was unable to get any sound at all. Last night I followed the directions described in https:/
It worked! I gleefully listened to a CD and watched a movie last night while I explored ubuntu.
This morning when I woke up and turned on the computer....no sound....no matter what... Please help
The next thing I'm going to try is to remove the SB sound card and see if I can get the internal card working.

I tried removing the SB card and rebooting. I chose the intel multimedia audio controller ICH6 in system:
I have tried plugging my speakers into all the different ports with no difference. I'm still perplexed as to what could have occured overnight to make things stop working.
Again....I'm very new at this.

The one thing that happened overnight is that you rebooted. Since the first set of instructions that your computer receives come from the BIOS it is quite likely that by having both a sound chip (on motherboard) as well as a soundcard created a conflict.
Go into the BIOS (your motherboard manual will guide you) and disable the onboard sound, Save your changes and then exit and reboot.

So I've had a busy few hours. Somehow I got it in my head that upgrading to Hardy would fix my problem. Well, I got it all loaded on the computer and it wouldn't recognize any sound card at all, internal or Soundblaster. I looked through the forums and couldn't find a fix that didn't require far more programing expertise than I have. Then I happened to check my email and saw the above response. I entered my bios and disabled my internal sound card....I think. I then put by Gutsy Live CD in the computer and rebooted. Lo and behold, in the live session I had full sound and recognition of my SB Audigy card. So I then reloaded 7.10. I am presently running the update manager, after which I will reboot and see whether everything works. If it does I'll log this as problem solved.
