Try with System -> Preferences -> Display resolution

The comment above is correct, but results depend on your video card and what driver is talking to it. Nvidia cards (like mine) seem to be relatively demanding; at any rate, the default nv driver would only give 800x600, but adding the several nvidia-* packages with Synaptic got me up to 1024x768.

I need to tell the system what Monitor i have so i can change the screen resolution, i cant find where to do this ?
