Disk Cleanup for the Uuntu Partition in a Dual Boot Computer

Asked by Darshan Singh Sahri

I have worked on my Ubuntu partition to configure sound and printer applications. I am sure there would be orphan files, duplicates, and redundant data files. Is there a built in program for Ubuntu to clean up the hard disk, the way they have in Windows ?

Actually, there is probably less junk than you think. Ubuntu isn't like windows. Programs use common library files to reduce redundancy. New apps might pull in new library files if the ones they need are missing. Sometimes when you remove apps the library and other files are no longer needed. In this case you usually get a message if you are working in a terminal that there are unneeded files. You might not see such a message in Synaptic (not sure as I don't use it much). To remove them open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get autoremove

If there are unneeded files they will be removed. Other than that I wouldn't worry about it much.
