admin passwd will not reset

admin passwd will not reset went to command line root@ubuntu;~# and tried to reset it and even after new password is successful it still has me locked out sudo passwd <username> gives error message any ideas on how i can recover my admin user id??

i also have no menu that comes up after booting in recovery

What version of Ubuntu are you running? Have you just done a release upgrade? There may be a problem with the release upgrade process were the user is not longer a part of the admin group. You can fix this by adding admin group back into the user's groups.

I finally got it it was not take the passwd because it wasnt posting to the administration user once i finally got a prop for user it worked Thanks for your help
