Not really an answer to your question but why yahoo messenger? Usually when you move to linux you also move to native linux apps. It's a change and a new way of thinking but ultimately you are better off in the end (i.e. better support, easier upgrades, few install problems). Pidgin is the default IM app in Ubuntu (at least in 7.10 - gaim was in early versions and I don't know when it changed). Try using Pidgin first before fighting with non-native programs.

How does pidgin or gaim interact with my contacts on yahoo?

I don't really use IM but my understanding is that you can interact with contacts regardless of what they use - yahoo, msn, aim, etc. Easiest thing to do is fire it up and give it a try.

I use Feisty Fawn.

I use gaim/pidgin to connect to yahoo. Just log into gaim/pidgin, open accounts, pick new and type in your Yahoo address etc. Everything works except the webcam. The only other problem I have is it is sometimes very slow.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that happens sometimes. Just ignore it.
