partition size change

Asked by wanness

I started to install Ubuntu on my XP machine. It went into the partition aspect. I started to have it change partitions. I changed my mind and canceled this installation. Now, every time that I attempt to boot into Win Xp, I get the chk dsk message. When I approve the chk, it will only go to 2nd stage and stops. My 80G HD now only shows as having 37G available. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Partitions are very tricky things. It sounds like something may not have been finalized. My suggestion is for you to first back up your data I Windows XP.

Once you've done a full and complete backup, boot from the newest Desktop CD you have. From the System > Administration menu, run "Partition Editor". If you can't find it, press. Alt-F2 and run 'gparted'.

Assuming you only have Windows XP installed, delete any partitions marked as ext2, ext3, or swap. If you have a swap partition, it's probably bring used, so right click it and click "swapoff". Then, resize your Windows XP partition to fill then entire dusk again. It will be marked as ntfs. Apply the changes and renoot into Windows. Windows should have a better chance of completing its disk check.

Nathan; I was able to follow enough of your instructions to accomplish the following.
I ended up with with a 37 G partition and a 40 G partition. My end goal after all this was to install Xandros for a dual boot, which I did. Thanks, for all of your help. bill
