Wireless adapter EDIMAX EW7128g installs on my PIII. It will not install on my Core 2 Duo.

Asked by Leroy Wolins

According to the Wiki I get on the PIII, it installs "Out of the box," and it did. According to the Wiki I get om the Core 2 Duo using UBUNTU, It won't install, and it doesn't. It does install on Windows Vista.

On the Core 2 Duo, I have Windows Vista installed on one hard drive, and UBUNTU on another hard drive. I need an adapter that works on both. I thought I had one, but alas .... How do I find one, or is this an empty set?

I was looking up possible ways to solve your answer when I came across a site that said that a Airlink 101 Ultra Slim 2.0 Wireless USB adapter would work with Ubuntu out-of-the-box. I found this one on eBay: 160159654398 it has a little over 19 hours left on it. By the way, the website I found this info is: http://i-eat-noobs.blogspot.com/2007/08/get-wireless-working-in-ubuntu-704.html Hope this information helps you and good luck!

There are quite q few adapters that work on UBUNTU, but, it seems, many do not work on UBUNTU. Likewise for Windows Vista -- I was amazed by the number of things that do not work on Vista. So ---

You probably know that, but if you use a 64 bit edition, you need to also use 64 bit drivers (not sure if they would be on the cd, but can be downloaded from edimax page; of course under this new ndiswrapper you did a good job compiling)?

Yes, I knew that. I noticed that the PIII used a different driver than rt61. This is the one on the CD and appears to be the same as the one on the web site.

Since I really have no real need for Windows Vista -- it won't run the only program I use that could take advantage of the potential of the chip and motherboard, SAS (A program that does statistical analysis.), I will give up trying to use my cumbersome quasi-dual-boot system and use this machine for OpenOffice and Gimp. Alternatively, both OS's work when I connect directly thru the DSL cable modem. However, this would involve displacing another computer, which I don't want to do. I'm going to buy a 64 bit wireless card that works with UBUNTU. EDIMAX has one, EW-7128lg, but it is not available in the US. So I will look into a Realtek 8180 chipset..

I have found an adapter that works with UBUNTU and Windows Vista. With UBUNTU it installs immediately -- Out-of the box. Windows needs a little coaxing -- don't use the disk.

The adapter is NETGEAR USB WG311v2. Since none of the other adapters given in the Wiki were readily available, I feel compelled to tell you that they are in stock for $40 at NEWEGG.
