unable to install applications from ubuntu software centre

when i tried to install applications like vlc i got error message.
It says failed to download repository information and check your internet connection.
but my internet is working fine.
could you help me..

In a terminal, try typing -

sudo apt-get update

and press enter. You will be asked for your password, so type that in (you won't see anything as you type!) then hit enter again. You should now see the system checking the repositories for updates.
If you see an error message, please copy and paste it here so we can see where the error lies.
