The modem of my IBM T23 doen't work

I've just intalled Ubuntu on a T23 IBM laptop.
The modem seems to be properly detected as it appears int he hardware list : Winmodem 56k.
But when I try to open a RTC connection using Gnome PPP or KPPP, the application return an error "Modem not detected".
