best printer?

Asked by writeandrevise

I am brand new in the Linux world and I love it!!! Life without Bill!!! Who would have believed it possible? I have found a word processor, image program, genealogy program, newsletter, recipe program, dictionary, games, etc., everything I need. I am using a HP Deskjet 960c.

My question is: Do some printers work better than others? Is there a HP that works best?

Thanks :)

There is no one best printer for everybody. It all depends on your printing needs as well. (But there are quite some "bad" printers for sure, if you are a Linux user :-) )

Have a look at this article:

   http://www.freestandards.org/printing/public/suggested.html

In general, all PostScript printers work, with the same functionality scope as in Windows NT 4.0, if you use the "*.ppd" file in CUPS that is shipped by the vendor with the WinNT driver.

HP currently is the one manufacturer that develops and delivers a Free Software printer driver family (HPLIP, http://hpinkjet.sf.net/ ) which supports *all* its current models (plus all but one or two past models) -- all in all nearly 1000 different printer model names (used around the globe). This is slowly coming true even for most non-printing functions of their multi-functionals (faxing, scanning)...

Ricoh (and OEM brands, like Danka/infotec, Lanier and some more) developed PPDs which work for PCL mode devices with foomatic-rip and the Ghostscript/pxlmono driver.
