Cannot install Mozilla Thunderbird

The software is not available at the Ubuntu Software Centre. I could not install the copy from Mozilla Thunderbird's site using the Package Manager. It actually corrupted the Firefox browser thereby disabling the browser and I had to completely re-install Ubuntu. I tried the technical queries section but it does not help. Thanks
