If I unserdstand you correctly Ubuntu is only OS on your machine. If you upgrade Karmic to Lucid and then wnat to remove Lucid you will end with no OS on your comp. You will need fresh install. You can make separate home partition if you don´t have one following http://psychocats.s465.sureserver.com/ubuntu/separatehome.In that case you will not lose your data/settings if you do fresh install.

Sorry for overlook. You want to dual boot Karmic and Lucid and maybe remove Lucid in future. In that case I think you will have to reinstall grub like it is described at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling from LiveCD

you may not need to remove lucid because in one month time they are releasing the stable release....either you wait for such time or install lucid and enjoy the improvements...initially you may find hiccups but that is acceptable as it is in development stage...and why not you be part of helping others killing the issues with your experience whatever you gained....it gives pleasure and satisfaction helping others.
Hope that helps you...
