Installing RealPlayer - How do I make executable?

Asked by matt

I am absolute nooB as of today with DOS and Linux.

Only use my comp for very basic things (listening to music, searching the net, and e-mail), so need to get RealPLayer working.

Having a couple of very basic issues that I want help with.

Trying to install realplayer. I have downloaded the RealPlayer10GOLD.bin to my desktop, and have then opened a terminal.

It then says to:
1. Make the downloaded file executable. At the command line, change to the directory where you downloaded the file, and type
chmod +x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin
2. To install Real Player 10, run the downloaded file. Type
sudo ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin

Question is how do I do the above 1 and 2?? (I tried copying 'chmod +x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin' into the terminal, but it's not working).

Hello,

Using RealPlayer and Real file formats in Ubuntu Linux is not supported basically so you need a pack of codecs and of course real player in order to play real media.

Here is a HOW TO which will guide you through how to install real player and not just real player but other codecs too for playing mov, avi, mpeg, mp3 and so on.

Go to this page https://wiki.kubuntu.org/RestrictedFormats

Hi

I had a lot of problems installing realplayer10, too. Someone gave me the following instructions, and it worked for me:

Ubuntu Dapper
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Main Menu ] System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
[Synaptic ] Settings -> Repositories
            Click "Add"
            Click "Custom"
            APT Line:
deb http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf dapper free non-free
     Click "Add Channel"
            Click "Close"
            Repositories Changed Dialog
            Click "Close"
[Synaptic ] Click "Reload" in the Toolbar
            Click "Search" in the Toolbar
            Right click on "realplay 10.0.6.xyzplf1" and select "Mark
for installation"
            Click "Mark"
            Click "Apply" in the Toolbar
            Summary Dialog
            Untick "Download package files only"
            Click "Apply"
When I did this, I got no sound from Realplayer at first, but it worked perfectly the next day. Hope this works for you, too
Since upgrading to Feisty I have only been able to find a bin file for Real Player. Are there any tarball of rpm downloads available?
