How to get Lexmark Z1380 to work in Ubuntu?

Asked by Charles Batchelor

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 but find my Lexmark printer - Z1380 - is not included in the list of printers.
Ubuntu recognises the printer when connected and recommends a driver for a different Lexmark.
This does not work and I am unable to print anything at present.
I have the installation disk, but it is only for Windows and Ubuntu is unable to install my printer from this disk.
I would add that I have had this printer for several years, it is not a new purchase.
Is there an easy way to get a driver that Ubuntu can use?

Lexmark support in Linux is very poor indeed, this is the fault of Lexmark. The openprinting database doesn't list the model either.
This looks promising:

btw, HP love Linux and make drivers galore, companys like Canon, Lexmark and Kodak nearly refuse to support anything other than Mac and Windows. I suggest you consider an HP next time you are on the market for a printer for a Linux system.

Can you help with this problem?
