Problems with Ubuntu 9.10...Need HELP

Asked by Said Kaldubaev

HI everybody! Please help me. Problem: For about 4-5 weeks ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.04, and it worked fine. But yesterday, I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10, but somewhy installation even didn't begin, when I pressed "install Ubuntu", after 3-4 seconds there appeared a "strange black" screen, and the installation process stopped. Everything OK with "System requirements". My laptop:
Compaq 610. If someone knows or bump into with such a problem, please help me. <email address hidden>

Please check the disc integrity after burning, and ISO integrity before doing it. If this does not help, write again.

Hi :)

An easier way is to try using the Ubuntu 9.10 Cd as a LiveCd, this guide might help although it is much more detailed than you really need
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

If that doesn't get you to a proper looking desktop then please try your old 9.04 Cd instead. If you can't find that then please just try making a new Cd using this guide for advice
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

I would also use the Shipit service to get a free official cd even tho one made on your own machine should work better
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
When you friends and colleagues become interested in having a look at Ubuntu they tend to be more impressed when you lend them an official cd rather than a home-made one. The LiveCd functionality makes it well worth making sure you always have a linux Cd somewhere around.

There area few ways of checking the integrity of the Cd. This guide gives one option worth trying

I hope something here helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

I have re-read your question and i think i know what went wrong. Please get a LiveCd session of either release of Ubuntu working and then go up to the top-taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

to get to a command-line. Using the mouse copy and paste this command in

sudo fdisk -l

where " -l" is a lower-case " -L". The "sudo" at the front gives the command SuperUser priveleges but it only asks for your normal user password. This neatly avoids the need for everyone to know the Superuser password, keeping it safer. Also while you type in the password it wont show any stars making it even more difficult for your password to get captured.

To find out what a command does so that you can check the advice you are given in forums you can get a quick-help cheat-sheet by typing the command followed by " -h" or " --help". Try it by typing

sudo -h
fdisk -h

To see what those commands do before typing them in.

Anyway, once you have typed or copied&pasted the command "sudo fdisk -l" please copy&paste the output into here so that we can see how your drive is structured.

Good luck, thanks and regards from
Tom :)

It; seems you didn't get me... The problem is that: when I insert disk there appears nothing, even Live-CD.

Hi :)

How far through the boot process do you get?

Mbord splash screen
Hardware detection (Primary, master, slave drives in white on black)
Bios (Press F2 or whatever? also tables of "irq" "interrupts" and stuff)

Grub (Ubuntu menu offering choice between Windows and Ubuntu)
or
Cd Menu ?

Please let us know
Regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
