In case your router incorporates a good netfilter (so it's a firewall then) and your curent PC is the only one on the network, then Firestarter is not necessary. Nevertheless I recommend you to use netfilters on every client though. Use UFW (and it's graphical frontend if you like) instead since Firestarter is discontinued. ;-)

You still have to, if that's only a router and not a firewall.

He said that he *installed a router*. I assume it's one of these routers you receive from your ISP. Thus I also assume there's a netfilter installed on the aforementioned firewalls (GNU/Linux) operating system. Thats the reason why I came to the conclusion Maxim Simicich won't require another netfilter installed on his PC (Ubuntu GNU/Linux). I also stated that I (that's my personal opinion) would install UFW on the Ubuntu box nervertheless.

Fiestarter as a project is not maintained anymore, default firewalloption for ubuntu is ufw or gufw.
Do you need a firewall when you are behind a router=hardware firewall? On a desktop environment: no.
Please check your system on this site: Shields-up, is everything stealth?===> you'r firewalled!

1] I already mentionend, that Firestarter is not maintained anymore. Read my first post again, please!

2] Firestarter and gUFW are graphical frontends and ufw is a so called "desktop-firewall". It's not a real firewall since real ones *never* run on the systems they actually protect.

3] Running a netfilter and a GUI (UFW+gUFW) still makes sense on on a desktop environment since the actual configuration may differ from the perimeter firewalls configuration. Best thing is to choose a different OS like BSD (m0n0wall) as the perimeter firewall and run UFW/gUFW on the Ubuntu system as an additional layer of security (possibly with different configuration).

A different configuration would allow someone to accept muslticast DNS or IGMP on a LAN whilst denying such packets at the perimeter. ;-)
