XFCE: lock screen does not fadeout

I've noticed that on some computers I've installed xubuntu, locking the screen (xflock4) does not fadeout, but simply freezes the screen and then goes to black.

Does anyone know how to enable/force the fadeout-effect?
(Or why its behavior differs from installation to installation?)

Yeah, probably...
I thought I'd ask this here as a question first to get a rough idea if anyone else has this and if I'm doing something wrong or exotic :)
