If you make a new user, is it the same?
Have you reported a bug?
Have you tested your RAM?

The ram is good. I don't have this problem with 11.10. Have not created a new user and I haven't made a bug report. When it happens I have no technical details to report because the desktop doesn't load or takes an extremely long time to load. When it does load it doesn't give an error.

Sorry about the multiple adds of the same info.

Yes, I too am facing the same problem with Xubuntu 12.04.
I switched to console login using CTRL+ALT+F1 and logged in, and Top showed the process 'init' being run.
Switching back with CTRL+ALT+F7, there was still no desktop.
The desktop appears after sometime. This is not consistent. Sometimes, it appears instantly.

Tried making a new user?

This is a new installation. In fact, another user was added recently, same behavior was noticed.

I uninstalled gvfs-fuse, gvfs-bin, & gvfs-backends to speed up Thunar and it sped up the desktop loading. Since doing this I haven't had this problem. The desktop loads very fast now and Thunar loads very quickly on first startup.

This seems to be working for the present. Tried on both user accounts a couple of times. Hope removing the files will not have any ramifications elsewhere. Thnaks.
