Dont have the bar with the application menu

I cant find the menu bar with the application menu I have tried several of the suggestions in the other answers. Right click of the mouse typing in the commands after alt-f2 nothing works I am running ubuntu 11.10.

The applications are all in Dash. You can show Dash by pressing the Windows key (aka SuperL in Linux) or clicking the Ubuntu logo in the top left of the screen. You can now search for the app you want. If you click the ruler-pencil-pen icon at the bottom of the Dash, you can then see a list of ALL installed apps and you can scroll up and down to run the app you desire.
