What controls automatic volume mounting in xubuntu natty?

I think I broke automatic mounting for my usb hard drive by formatting it UDF.
I want to try reconfiguring it myself, but I don't even know what "it" is.
My question is pretty basic: what controls automatic mounting? What is "it"?
It's not `autofs', not is it `usbmount'. Those are not installed.
Thanks for any hints in the right direction.
