I cannot Connrct through my modem to the Internet

I recently installed a copy of UBUNTU 8.0 on my BenQ (JoyBook s52) laptop computer.I cannot connect to the Internet via my laptop's computer.Could you please help me?I'll appreciate any kind of help.
