Xsplash fades to desktop too early

The problem I'm having is that xsplash fades out to the desktop too early. Some programs (mainly awn) haven't had enough time to load. What event causes xsplash to fade out to the desktop and is it possible to extend that event until all the start up programs have been fully loaded?
