screen blank issue after removing xorg ppa

Asked by Swaroop Chakraborty

Hi,

Just one day ago, while trying to install samba, I was getting low graphics mode after boot. So, I installed xorg drivers after reading a forum but it didn't work. Then as soon as i removed the samba, my machine started working fine.

Now, today, while updating with update manager, it failed to install the updates and asked me to remove any third party drivers installed and run the command 'sudo apt-get install -f' in terminal. So, I removed x-org ppa from the other software list and then ran the command. It removed the x-org libraries and packages. Then when I restarted my machine, the screen turned blank. No I am unable to go to terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Please suggest.

Regards,
swaroop

Hi ,

you said that removed xorg libraries and packages. What is Xorg ? take a look here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X.Org_Server

Try to reinstall it

sudo apt-get install xorg xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-core xserver-common

Then try to reinstall essential packages (I ASSUME YOU USE UBUNTU 12.04)

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-mono ubuntu-mini lightdm

Reboot you PC

Thanks

I'm extremely sorry for doing such a blunder. I'm new to Ubuntu so thought that xorg may be the one thats creating problem, so better remove it. My mistake...sorry...and thanks for the prompt help. You guys are genius.

Just yesterday night, Nick was awake with me till 1:30 trying to resolve my hard blocked wireless and bluetooth switch issue. Before that, Andrew was the one who solved my update manager issue. Truly I know the pain you guys take and the dedication you all have to help such a vast amount of ubuntu users when they are really in trouble. Thank you guys a lot.

Regards,
swaroop
