VIA nano U3500 gpu VX855 make console blurred, only on ubuntu 10.04

Asked by wally

Hi, I am using VIA nano U3500, it`s gpu is VX855, and I found it has an bug on 10.04, be more correctly, it has an bug on linux kernel 2.6.32.

when I boot use DVI connect my monitor, and boot the computer, the console screen will get blurred, but after it get into X, it`s screen recovery from blurred console(and if you press ctrl+alt+F1~F6, the console getting blurred again, but the computer still working, I can press ctrl+alt+F7 to switch X anytime, and I still can do command in the blurred console though the screen is unreadable).

But if I use VGA to connect the monitor, the bug has gone, all console and X working fine.

I`ve tried many dists, and below is the result:

VX855/875 console X window
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  9.04 pass(2.6.28) pass(X using special 87a driver)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 10.04 fail(2.6.32) pass(X using 87f driver)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12.04 pass(3.2.18) fail(X using openchrome, but vesa pass)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the 87 series driver is VIA official driver.

I also tried using 9.04 kernel (2.6.28) to boot the 10.04, and the DVI blurred screen bug also gone, so it seems a bug in linux kernel 2.6.32?

I do a google search, and found some issue like this bug, but I not sure they use DVI or VGA:

could someone help me confirm this bug?

hi, I remove all the modules in /lib/modules/2.6.32.59+drm33.24/kernel/video/* (but I keep only one directory which named console), now my console get working! It seems 2.6.32 will modprobe some module(maybe vesafb.ko or uvesafb.ko or viafb.ko etc...) and make screen blurred.

but 12.04`s kernel with those modules still work correctly.

since via now only have stable gpu driver for 10.04, I will stick to 10.04 `till via release the new gpu driver.
