I tested 10.04 and it worked great

Asked by Brian Kimber

when I installed it on my HP netbook, I only get a blank, black screen. I have re-installed and get the same result. Again, when i run it from the flash drive it works great.

I suggest when you boot that you add the boot option:

nomodeset

to the kernel options, you can do this by holding SHIFT at boot then press E to (E)dit the kernel and then simply type the word in th options. Then resume the boot, if it works then edit /etc/default/grub to make the option permanent.

If that doesn't work then try:

i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa

as a boot option

If you also look in /etc/X11 on the live environemt you may find a known good xorg.conf which you can then copy to etc/X11 on your internal partition. You can mount the partition from the Places menu but you will need:

gksudo nautilus

to get write access and you can then use the new instance of nautilus to copy the file over, then reboot to the installed system.

Jaunty and later do not ship with an xorg.conf file but if one exists then it will be obeyed.

I tried the two commands and they were not effective. the part about /etc/x11 was way above my pay grade and knowledge. I have just started working with linux and ubuntu and I am not a programmer. Anyway, long story short, I downloaded the .iso file again and made a new usb and it works beautifully. I have a mac but on my netbook I didn't want windows. it looks like ubuntu is it.
