10.04 on TP R30 Trident Cyberblade only VGA

Asked by Per Moller

I'm now on 10.04 on my old ThinkPad R30. It has an XGA-capable display card but on 10.04 I gat only get it to use 800x600 or lower.
It's been the same since at least 9.04. But on 10.04 beta I had an xorg.conf that solved the problem, but there is no xorg.conf on the LTS version
Can someone help?

If you make one it will be obeyed. If you have a backed up xorg.conf from a previous install it will work fine. If you boot to root recovery console and run:

sudo Xorg --configure

it will make you a skeleton file you can play with.

Good idea -
None of my tries to place the old (tiny) xorg.conf have been successfull: lack of rights to copy files to /etc/x11 and so forth.
My failure to follow your advice is snipped here:
>permol@TP-R30:~$ sudo Xorg -configure

Just a final update - and thanks to "actionparsnip": I still consider what worked as a workaround rather than a fix: the automated hardware detection failed and I had to use "geeky tricks".
I did: "terminal, "sudo nautilus", copied my old, simple xorg.conf to /etc/x11, booted and changed my display setting. And voilá...
Thanks again
