Hangs at splash screen

Asked by vinay savla

I tried to install it
1. inside windows (hangs at splash screen)
2. outside windows (again hangs at splash screen)
3. tried booting directly from cd. (same result hangs at splash screen)

in all the above processes it hangs at splash screen just as the scroll bar reaches the end of the first line.

i tried installing from a cd given by my friend
i tried installing from the cd that came free from your side.

i have never used any linux versions so as a fresher or an amatuer i cant understand what the other guys write in the other faq's of similar questions regarding this problem.

Try to install using the alternate CD. This bypasses any misbehaving video cards

If you have a broadband you can download it your self or you can go somewhere with broadband and get them download it for you. This is a list of mirrors to use:

What exactly was the problem with the alternate CD? Did you manage to install but not working or did not install at all?

If you mean the splash screen I think you mean (the one with the logo, the text ubuntu, and a single progress bar, in the middle of a dark screen), then try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to see what it's doing when it gets stuck.

You originally asked back in 2008--have you tried it with the latest version of Ubuntu (10.04)?

A quick search suggests that SiS graphics don't play nicely with Linux. E.g. see these rather daunting instructions:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-sis-771671-mirage-3-video-drivers-in-ubuntu-10-04-lucid.html

Although SiS do offer some Linux drivers at:
http://www.sis.com/download/

Can you help with this problem?
