Horizontal lines across screen like question 141544

Asked by vhm14u2c

Question 141544 brought me here, and since I am having the same issue (many random horizontal lines) using a clean install of ubuntu/ylmf 10.04 on a ibm i1300 laptop wanted to post results that I have from those commands to see if I can get rid of those lines.

'lspci -nn|grep VGA' command returned:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Silicon Motion, Inc. SM712 LynxEM+ [126f:0712] (rev a0)

and 'sudo lshw -C display' command returned:
  *-display UNCLAIMED
       description: VGA compatible controller

       vendor: Silicon Motion, Inc.
       physical id: 2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0

       clock: 66MHz
       capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=32
       resources: memory:e000000-effffff

I did try to create the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file from question 141544, changing a few things, first tried driver "vesa", then "siliconmotion", then tried to take out a bunch of things, each time just took me to a linux prompt, and would not init GUI.

If you have a xorg.conf file with entries I can try, please let me know, and thanks.

Vince

I will get that info soon, and will reply as soon as I can.
The ibm laptop is on a dual-boot session in win-xp at the moment installing updates. Thanks for the quick reply.

Also, I updated the package details in question information.

Your system says Lucid, but you are using Precise sources. What have you been doing with your OS exactly? It's a mess

I have been trying a few things, lol. The initial OS, was a lower version of ubuntu(6 I beleive, the one that came out in 2010 and was in chinese where you have to change the language using sudo locale-gen en command, tried to do the upgrade to 10.04, looked like some of it went through. Then when I clicked the update software for ubuntu 12.10 I think, it gave me a bunch of errors, and said I had broken packages and locks. installed google browser to type in errors, search for commands to try to remedy, done them, seemed like it cleaned up a little, but as you mentioned, yep, its a mess.

I have the later isos of startos, version of ylmf, and zorin. I may try one of those, wanted to try the smallest one though first since this laptop i'm using is not running xp very well anymore.

2010 would be 10.04 or 10.10. The first number is the year of release. Ubuntu 6.xx would have been released in 2006

I recommened you clean install with Precise and wipe out the old config and OS. Backup your user data once more before you start. You have a half-Frankenstein OS. No wonder you are getting issues.

I fully agree with actionparsnip.

You have a Frankenstein O.S. :-p

Your Terminal output shows this issue as well:

X.Org X Server 1.7.6
Release Date: 2010-03-17
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.24-29-server i686 Ubuntu
Current Operating System: Linux vince-desktop 2.6.32-45-generic #101-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 3 15:41:13 UTC 2012 i686

The Xorg Server version on your PC is 1.7.6 (released in 2010), but your kernel is from December 2012. That is a discrepency of 2.5 years between kernel and Xorg components, which can cause major graphics problems.
The build operating system was GNU/Linux kernel 2.6.24, but your current GNU/Linux operating system version is 2.6.32. That is another huge discrepancy...

Please read this:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/xorg-server/2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.10

The current Xorg server version for Ubuntu 12.04 is xorg-server 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.10

You are also mixing repositories from precise and lucid which is not allowed. Mixing repositories like this can and will break your apt-get package manager. You need to stick to one release of Ubuntu in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Thanks to you both for your answers.
I found out which version I was using. It was a ubuntu 9.10 version, I am getting a ubuntu 10.04 lucid desktop image right now since it looks like it still fits on a cd.
The place I seen the "6" was on the linux version on the multiboot screen, said something like linux 2.6.3.

Thanks again, a real learning experience, and hopefully will be able to fix that horizontal line issue using the xorg.conf.failsafe config. I might stay away from the updates (thought that may fix the horizontal lines) unless they are really needed, lol. Still going to install chrome if its not there though.
I will let you know if I was able to get it fixed using this later 10.04 cd.

Why are you not following actionparsnip's suggestion in reply #9?

In just a few months from now, support for Ubuntu 10.04 will be dropped (end-of-life) and you can start all over again....

I would not do that.

Lubuntu 12.04 fits on a CD as well. That - to me - seems like a better deal.

Furthermore, you should not need to configure the xorg.conf.failsafe config or xorg.conf files manually anymore. Xorg can work fine without creating and configuring xorg.conf manually.

So I suggest installing Lubuntu 12.04 via CD-RW or installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using a USB stick (if your BIOS can boot from USB)....

I may have missed that. If 12.04 fits on a cd, I will do that since 10.04 is close to EOL.

Thanks again.

I have tried to install the Lubuntu 12.04, got to the prompt for english, and to install, and then just kept churning/using the hard drive, and cdrom for over 4+ hours, and no other prompts since. I think it may be a memory issue, this only has 192mb.

Installing over a usb flash would not work so well on this laptop since the ports are 1.0.
To get around not using usb, I would be better off to use fast link (FX) fxsvr.exe with a machine with a cdrom, and a fxlink.exe in config.sys with network enabled.

I may try the 10.04 one more time even though it did bomb during install, maybe also because of a memory issue.

I may even fall back to 9 since that was the only one I had luck with so far. I don't think that has the xorg.conf stuff installed on that version though.

I am thinking maybe I need to install the nvidia driver to get vesa to work in the failsafe script. That script which is not in the /etc/X11/ directory, but have saved and tried unsuccessfully so far look like this:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

I may try to run an update, or install the nvidia driver. If you have an idea, please let me know, and thanks.

Considering that your PC only has 192 MB of RAM (very low), I recommending testing other LiveCD's specially made for low-memory laptops.

Test the newest versions of the LiveCD's in the wikipedia link, until you find a distribution that is brand new and that works out-of-the-box on your PC, without any fiddling around. That is what I would do now, if I were you..... The reason I am suggesting this, is because version 10.10 of Ubuntu is now end-of-life and not supported anymore....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Linux_distribution

I recommend starting out with Vector Linux 7.0 Light (edition) and Puppy Linux.

I will try those ideas as well. Yes, the memory is low, its actually maxed-out @192mb, this laptop maybe EOL too, lol.
It was not even made to take a 40gb hard drive, but there was a loader I was able to attach to it to make it like the drive.

Thanks again,

Vince

Grab the Lubuntu Quantal CD ISO, MD5 test it and use that

I did try lubuntu quantal-lubuntu 12.10, that was the one that kept churning over 4-5 hours, and did nothing else in post #15.

Tried Vector Linux 7.0 Light, not for me, plus it had the same video issue (all of them have the lines so far when it goes into gui mode).

Just looking for one that can play youtube vids on site, flvs (saved youtube vids), can install chrome, and has the soduku game (most ubuntus) have that game, vector linux did not.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask vhm14u2c for more information if necessary.
